Manual vs AI smart contract audits

AI and automated tools are good at known patterns: reentrancy signatures, missing modifiers, unchecked return values. They are poor at protocol-specific logic, economic attacks and anything that depends on what the code is meant to do, which is where the expensive bugs live. HYDN uses tooling to support every audit, but every audit is led and written by people.

What tools do well

  • Spotting known vulnerability patterns quickly and consistently.
  • Covering large codebases for simple issues.
  • Flagging style, gas and code quality problems.
  • Running continuously during development.

What they miss

  • Intent. Whether the code does what the protocol is meant to do. A tool cannot know that a fee should never exceed 1%, or that only the timelock should pause.
  • Economics. Whether an attacker with unlimited flash loaned capital can profit from your pricing, rewards or liquidations.
  • Cross-contract behaviour. Bugs that only appear when several contracts and external protocols interact.
  • Novel bugs. Anything not already in the patterns the tool was built or trained on.
  • False positives. Tools often report many issues that are not exploitable, which takes human time to triage.

How HYDN combines them

Tooling supports our auditors. It does not replace them. Senior auditors review the code by hand, modelling how a motivated attacker would approach it, and a human decides what matters and writes your report. The rise of AI audits has coincided with a rise in web3 hacks, and we are finding a growing number of vulnerabilities in code that looks completely idiomatic.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Should we run an AI audit before a manual one?

Running tools yourself first is sensible: it clears out simple issues so the paid audit time goes on harder problems. Just do not treat a clean tool run as an audit.

Does HYDN build AI security tools?

Yes. HYDN has shipped AI-native products for smart contract auditing and penetration testing. We still use human security experts for all client engagements.
